Solla Calls Political Parties To Respect Their Code Of Conduct.
September 12, 2017 - Written by Editor:With the Promotion of Somaliland Constitutions, democratic process, and rule of law, Somaliland Lawyers Association never remains silent from the non-observance of electoral laws by the political parties. Recently, the role of Electoral Watchdog in holding competing candidates accountable to the laws, and effectively enforcing the electoral code of conduct against the parties, appears to be shaky. In this regard SOLLA calls for non-state actors, mainly civil society organizations, social leaders, Media Institutions; Academic clubs to step in to the field to reduce the impact of a negative political mobilization could have to our national stability, and the Unity of Somaliland People. SOLLA stresses the significance of avoidance approach and the reduction of politically motivated tensions rather than taking the mediatory role when things go from worse to worst. We are placing considerable emphasis to the maintenance of law and order, and strongly condemning any prospect of impunity from the part of Political Parties during their electoral campaigns. SOLLA underlines the importance of standing with the Electoral Commission, and the supporting role of civil society in working with the lawenforcing institutions (Police) and Judiciary. Without the eyes of civil society, political competition will go out of control. The possibility of mobilizing the public along clan lines, and the continuing disrespect to the authorities are disturbing sign to our common destiny as a one nation. It is paramount for the Presidential candidates to honour the code of conduct in which they have signed to abide. In response to the unauthorized Campaigns, SOLLA urges Political Parties and their candidates to respect the laws of the nation.
