Statement by the EU Special Envoy to Somalia on Al Shabaab attack against UN convoy

The EU Special Envoy to Somalia, Michele Cervone d’Urso, condemns the appalling and horrific attack that took place close to the international airport in Mogadishu yesterday.

“I express my deep condolences to the families of the Somali citizens that have been killed as a result of this attack and I wish a speedy recovery to those injured. The people of Somalia are tired of bombs and bloodshed caused by terrorists only interested in spreading fear and destitution. No bomb attack or explosion will however convince them that violent extremism is the answer. It will only result in the opposite: a stronger determination against anti-peace elements“, he said.

The European Union, together with the UN and rest of the international community, continues to support Somalia, its leaders and its people on their course to peace and stability. A course that will not be deviated by such cowardly actions. (END)
